Chablais pack - Chronicle of a chaos foretold
The Chablais pack formed in 2019, covering a vast territory that includes part of Switzerland (Bouveret-Torgon-Troistorrent-Val d'Illiez-Morgins-Chésery) as well as France (Cornettes de Bise-Abondance-Châtel-Mont de Grange-Pré de la Joux). This pack is therefore, and always has been, a cross-border one. We also have solid evidence of its presence in France, thanks to the monitoring carried out by our French colleagues. This pack, formed by M88 and F43, is the third pack to have settled in Valais, after those of Augstbord and Anniviers-Réchy (then called Val d'Anniviers). It had a litter every year until 2023, but following the disappearance of M88, who was shot during the first phase of proactive regulation, it did not reproduce in 2024. The return of a new breeding male, not yet genetically identified, led to further reproduction with the original female, but above all... to an increase in attacks! We would like to explain the current situation in detail, without mincing words, so that the public can understand how, from a stable and relatively non-predatory pack, we have now reached a point of intense pressure on the local pastoral community.
