Arsene's pack - News about Ella, the sub-adult

Ella, she's got it...the art of playing little tricks on us ! 

The story of this video is quite funny, since we had no trace of the pack on any of our camera traps for over 10 days. For some obvious reasons, the breeding pair no longer moves around as much it used to, which is normal at that time of the year (cubs arrival). It will change in the next weeks for sure. The sub-adult "Ella" moves a lot on the territory, always alone. The breeding female doesn't allow any presence around the den during the cubs' first two-three weeks of life, so it's common for sub-adults to take advantage of this to escape a little and experiment. 

So we chose a well-selected area in relation to the pack's habits, place of frequent passage. It's not a good idea to play yo-yo and keep changing the staging areas, or you'll miss the wolf. Ours has been chosen for this special reason, but the pack isn't showing up for the moment. Due to the territory size, there's nothing surprising and no reason to worry about this. It's a fool's game to try to photograph or film a wolf, a long-term job that requires great patience, perseverance and the luck of a Euromillion winner ! However, we learn a lot and meet lots of other animals - it's rewarding, not frustrating.

One morning, we set the last two remaining traps, but a little voice inside us told us to set two other traps, previously checked 2 days earlier and located in a high-presence area. The little voice was right, since the sub-adult had made a pass on one trap in the evening, and on the other the following morning... But we were surprised to see that Ella had passed by that morning, 50 minutes before we did. The rascal had stood us up!

We look forward to seeing her again and sharing her adventures with you. This sub-adult is a beautiful wolf in the making, we'll see how long she stays in the pack...
