ABOUT US
Wolf Mission is a research project of the GROUPE LOUP SUISSE, led by a team of dedicated and passionate volunteers from diverse backgrounds and fields of study. The study and overall management are led by a biologist/ethologist, a biologist specializing in wildlife conservation (with a focus on large predators), and the director of the French-speaking region for Groupe Loup Suisse.

However, none of this would be possible without our wonderful team, who support us in the field by carrying out various tasks such as monitoring, collecting evidence of animal presence, and much more.

At Wolf Mission, we have two main objectives:

* To gather extensive data which supports governmental agencies in making informed decisions about wolf pack management (e.g., culling) while countering biased evidence from untrustworthy or lobbied non-governmental organisations.

* To improve public knowledge about wildlife by sharing insights from our in-situ and ex-situ work. We aim to educate both adults and children on topics such as species interaction or specific animals such as wolves or prey animals (e.g., Ibex).

Through this website, you will gain direct access to the information we’ve gathered on wolf packs and wildlife over the past two years. We’ll be of course sharing our discoveries, photos and videos, news articles and monthly reports on topics relevant to wildlife conservation.

OUR PROGRAMM EDUWOLF

The new educational and scientific center on wolf education in Switzerland!

What if we learned to get to know the wolf, rather than fear it?

EDUWOLF is a Swiss educational project born of a strong conviction: knowledge is the best tool against fears and preconceived ideas.

Created by the Groupe Loup Suisse, building on the work of Mission and led by a team of scientists, mediators and naturalists, EDUWOLF offers a lively, rigorous and neutral education on one of the most emblematic - and debated - animals of our mountains: the wolf.

School workshops, activities, conferences, teaching materials... The program is aimed at students as well as teachers, parents or anyone curious to better understand the place of the wolf in our ecosystem.

Observe, understand, debate, without judging: that is our approach.

Our network is open to all passionate people, naturalists, wildlife photographers, volunteers, and anyone involved in monitoring wolves packs.

Every observation and every data points counts!

We can share, cross-reference, and analyze information, support one another, and move forward together to better understand how the packs operating in our territories function.

Join a caring, committed, and useful network.

Because better understanding the wolf helps protect it and promotes better coexistence with humans and their activities.

Support Mission Loup – Study, understand, protect & educate

Wolves play a key role in our ecosystems, but they are often misunderstood. With your donations, you can help us advance two essential projects: Mission Loup and Eduwolf.

MISSION LOUP – Learning more about the packs in Valais

We are studying a wolf pack in Valais to better understand how it functions and behaves, and to provide reliable, concrete data to the public and official bodies.

To continue our observations, we need specialised equipment: camera traps, thermal imaging equipment, sound recording equipment, etc.

Your support enables us to collect invaluable information for fact-based coexistence. This data is crucial for establishing studies and approaches with federal and European authorities.

EDUWOLF – Raising awareness for the future

With Eduwolf, we visit schools, universities and other organisations to offer children and young people a scientific, lively and neutral view of wolves. We want our future generations to become informed citizens, aware of how our society works and able to make informed decisions.

We need educational materials to make each encounter captivating, offering workshops that are constantly evolving and adapted to each age group.

Thanks to you, new generations are learning to understand and respect living creatures.

Your donation has a direct impact

By contributing, you are helping to:

Strengthen field research in order to provide scientific and practical support for wolves in Switzerland.

Provide modern, innovative educational tools to enable younger generations to become aware of nature and become citizens who understand how society works.

Promote peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife.

CANIDS - THE REAL DANGER FOR HUMANS TODAY

We worked in collaboration with lupine & canine specialists, veterinarians (behaviorists), doctors and historians/writers, whom we thank for their kind participation. We've also based this entire dossier on the many books, statistics and official studies we've read on the whole subject.

We give you the opportunity to explore, in greater depth, the subject of the fear of the wolf, which is constantly coming to the fore and has become a weapon of political instrumentalization. You'll learn more about the history, functioning & behavior of canines, the reality of canine-human conflicts in our society, statistics and more...

Happy reading and share the web link !

THE WOLF IN SWITZERLAND

Between 1894 and 1984, several wolves have been in Switzerland but all of them were shot. The official wolf return took place in 1995, in Valais. The individual was quickly shot following attacks on livestock but...without having been officially identified, so the shooting wasn't really valid. Between 1996 and 2010, only a few solitary individuals transited Switzerland, mostly in the Alps (Grisons, Valais and Tessin). Most of them were males, only 6 females were identified between 2002 and 2011. The first Swiss pack was formed in 2012, in the Calanda Massif in Grisons. In Romandie, the first pack has been founded in Ausgbord (Valais), in 2015. In Vaud, the first pack has been founded in 2019, called "The Marchairuz pack". In St.Gallen, the first pack has been founded in 2022 (Calfeisental).

By the end of 2023, Switzerland have at least 34 packs, some other are under examination. But as a massive regulation is underway, with 9 packs able to be shot entirely, we'll have to wait until February 2024 to really have a reliable count. Around 12 packs are located in Valais (4 of which are cross-border, 3 with France and 1 with Italy) and around 5 packs in Vaud (3 of which are cross-border with France).

The wolf population is estimated at around 300 individuals. The 3 maps below show the numbers of packs in 2023, wolf population trends from 1994 to 2022, and livestock losses from 1999 to 2022.

In 2024 and 2025, the Salentin pack accounted for 53% and 42% of attacks in protected areas in French-speaking Valais alone.

In Upper Valais, 44 livestock animals were killed in protected situations (compared to 121 in 2024, a decrease of more than 50%), for a total of 191 in all situations (compared to 265 in 2024, a decrease of 28%).

As of December 31, 2025, across all protection situations, 190 losses occurred in Upper Valais and 127 (including 55 in the Mauvoisin region, a new cross-border pack) in French-speaking Valais.

NOTE: AS OF SEPTEMBER 15, 2025, THERE WERE 45 MORE LOSSES THAN ON SEPTEMBER 10, 2024.

Errors, at various levels and some of them very serious in 2025, were noted and reported !

REACTIVE REGULATION

1 male wolf shot in Naters on June 28, 2025 (M546)

1 female wolf shot in Ernen on August 4, 2025 (F168, breeding female from the new Binntal pack - serious offense)

1 female wolf shot in Zermatt on August 20, 2025 (F313)

PROACTIVE REGULATION

The canton has requested the complete regulation of the following packs:

- Chablais (cross-border)

- Simplon (cross-border)

- Salentin

CHABLAIS: as of December 31, 2025, five cubs and three adults (including two killed during a period not authorized by the OChP) had been killed.

SALENTIN: as of January 6, 2026, 1 adult has been shot.

And the shooting of two-thirds of the cubs born in 2025 in the following packs:

The DNA of M121, a former solitary male from the Marchairuz pack who has now joined the Jougne-Suchet pack (replacing the breeding male that was shot), appears 10 times in attacks, all of which were on sheep/goats.

As for M351, a breeding male from the Mont-Tendre pack, his DNA appears in thirtheen attacks on cattle in 2025, while F186 DNA appears in only 2 attacks.

We would like to remind you that DNA alone cannot be used to identify the perpetrator of an attack according to current guidelines.

REACTIVE REGULATION

The DGE (Direction Générale de l'Environnement vaudoise) has issued two shooting permits, one for M351 (pseudo danger to humans, which, as it stands, is not documented in any way and cannot be legitimately proven) and the second for M121 (exceeding the quota of victims but targeted as a solitary male, even though all the evidence shows that he has joined the Jougne-Suchet pack as a new breeding male). The shooting perimeter was then reduced and does not affect the territory of the Jougne-Suchet pack.

* 1 female wolf shot on August 2, 2025 (F186, breeding female, not targeted by the request)

* 1 wolf wounded on July 4, 2025 (not found to date, has certainly survived)

PROACTIVE REGULATION

The canton requested authorization to cull the Mont-Tendre pack.

To date, nine individuals, including 6 adults (including two killed during a period not authorized by the OChP) and 3 pups, have been shot.

The canton has requested the culling of two-thirds of the pups in the Brévine pack, the only pack present in the canton.

As of December 31, 2025, 4 pups have been shot as part of this culling program.

The canton of Neuchâtel is part of Zone 5, which also includes the Vaud Jura. If the Mont-Tendre pack is eliminated, the quotas will reach two packs present in this zone, which is the legal minimum. If it turns out that the new Brévine pack is cross-border, zone 5 would then have 1.5 packs, which is less than the legal minimum. Proactive culling would then be prohibited in 2026, as things stand.
